Here’s my prediction. Weezy drops an album later this year. It’s called The Resurrection. His first track on the record is called The Second Coming. It starts off with just a flatline beep for a good five/six seconds. Then we hear “Ahem…” followed by Weezy’s signature, nasally laughter. “Jesus ain’t ready for meh…haha…Jesus ain’t ready for me! Fuck this shit ni…” Then this fat ass beat drops, new shit, real ill type shit, and Weezy’s like “Yeh…I was in a coma \ seein’ shit like I was at the Moma \ and yeh ni… i was chewing on some somas \ it’s a brave new world \ fuck that shit, it’s wayne’s new world!” More laughter. Beat slows down. More chitter chatter from Wayne. Then the beat crescuendos and drops HARD again. Wayne goes OFF about getting brain from the nurses, about drinking purple stuff at the hospital, about how we wrote all these rhymes when he was out cold, and more stuff about bitches n shit. Anyway… that’s just my prediction. Don’t quote me on any of this stuff.

6 Things I Learned From The Oscars

I saw a lot of activity tonight and discussion around the “Real Time Marketing” that we are now seeing on Twitter around big events. Oreo started the craze at the Super Bowl with this tweet:

Since then, there’s been many articles and people discussing how real time marketing is going to change things in social. While i do agree with that on a certain level, it seems brands since then are completely missing the point.

As i watched the Oscar’s tonight, and by watched i mean followed the conversations on Twitter, i noticed a few things that i think a brand can learn if they want to make a splash on a big night:

#1 Responsive Social Marketing is the aim

Most brands organized their photos around events that they knew would take place at the Oscar’s. Bond Tribute, Red Carpet, Award Nominees, etc. While this makes them seem real time in interesting, they aren’t. Photoshopping an image the day before and sending it out when an even happens is bland and boring.

If brands want to be part of the conversation, they need to create a new one, or respond to an unexpected one that takes place. Something Oreo did very well

#2 Be Innovative

Creating additional hashtags, sending out images, and using celebs to tweet your brand isn’t enough anymore. Most tweets were flat and stale for the Oscar’s.

Try something new. I was surprised how few brands leveraged Vine or any other video service

#3 Don’t Use Instagram

Now that Instagram no longer can display as a Twitter card and requires users to click out to see the image, the convenience and engagement are way down. Brands uploading their images straight to Twitter seemed to get a much high interaction rate.

#4 Don’t Force It

If it doesn’t feel natural for your brand to be involved, don’t. Saw a lot of images of products photoshopped onto red carpets that looked disingenuous. This was a great example of a brand that wouldn’t necessarily tweet during the Oscar’s do something that fit:

#5 Be There

The Oscars themselves ended up having the most interesting tweets of the night, sending pics from backstage during the event:

Making yourself a part of the event or at least somewhere near it makes the connection and the exclusivity all the more intriguing. Think backstage at a concert, letting a celeb attending run your account for the night, Sending Vine’s from the red carpet

#6 Facebook Is Old News

Brands using Facebook seemed to have a larger disconnect from the actual event. The sentiment that Twitter is more “mobile” and “real time”, as well as no mention of Facebook during the telecast itself left the platform hanging.

While there obvious advantages still, there really isn’t anyway for brands using Facebook to become part of existing conversations. Being handcuffed in only starting your own on your own page is holding Facebook back from letting brands become a part of live events
